Autism Assessments

What is an Autism Assessment?

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects social communication, behaviour, and sensory processing. It is characterised by a wide range of experiences and abilities, reflecting the diversity of the spectrum. Individuals with autism may have challenges with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviours, but they also often possess distinct strengths such as attention to detail, strong memory skills, and deep expertise in areas of interest.

At Paradigm Psychology Clinic, we approach autism with a neuroaffirmative lens, recognising and respecting the unique neurological profile of each individual. Our clinical approach is centered on providing tailored support that enhances both daily functioning and the inherent strengths of those on the spectrum, promoting well-being and fulfillment.

Four stages to your Autism Assessment

Session 1- Initial Consultation

The first step involves meeting with a clinician to discuss the reason for referral and what you would like to get out of testing. Your clinician will also gather a comprehensive history and ensure the appropriate tests are selected.

Duration: 1 hour

Session 2 - Clinical Interview and Cognitive Assessment

Your clinician will conduct a structured clinical interview using the MIGDAS-2 approach. This method is specifically designed to gather detailed information about social communication, sensory experiences, and behaviours related to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The interview is conversational and interactive, allowing the clinician to observe communication styles, social interactions, and sensory responses in a comfortable setting.

Cognitive Assessment is also completed

Duration: 2 - 3 hours

Behavioural Questionnaires

Individuals, parents and teachers are required to completed behavioural questionnaires to assess symptoms and adaptive functioning skills

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes (per questionnaire)

Session 3: Feedback Session

Once testing is complete, it typically takes 3 weeks for your clinician to score and prepare your report. Your clinician will then meet with you to discuss the results and individually tailored recommendations.

Duration: 1-1.5 hours
